Sometimes it’s not just the wine but the whole experience that contributes to the wine.
Ancient Peaks Winery in Santa Margarita, just south of Paso Robles was established by Father Junipero Serra, who established the mission trail throughout California. It was and is a working cattle ranch. Over the past 300 years many gunslingers, roughriders and outlaws have passed through the property for a myriad of reasons.
The vineyard is on an ancient sea bed, thus a layer in the strata of oyster shells; some large, some small. Soil high in calcium, plus the location and cooling cross winds result in the cooler growing environment than many vineyards in the region.
The result is fruit with depth and full structure. The 2012 Renegade demonstrates this richness in character. And it’s offered for $24. This beauty is a Syrah/Malbec blend with a touch of Petit Verdot. The Syrah gives it a dark, color with savory spices. The Malbec brings a juicy, fruity component and the Petit Verdot adds backbone to the finish.
This powerful yet elegant wine won my heart! And the price is right!
